Speak When Spoken To

As a people, we're not just meant to say any and everything that comes to mind, but only what is given to us to say at that moment and only in such a way as to be helpful.

To be sure, the Mark 13:11 reference was meant for being in certain situations, but I think the point there is to speak whatever is given to you to say.

Why is this important? Because people can hear you. The unguarded moments where you feel the need to perform are the ones that get you. It's a very common trap and one that I try to avoid. As I write this blog, I've tried to make it a scheduled thing and do this every week, but some weeks, I honestly may have nothing that lights my fire to share.

What then?

Should I just write anyway because it's on schedule? No way. It's a hard thing to feel like you can't measure up to a task and maybe even more to feel like we're letting people down, but it's on another level entirely -- AND DANGEROUS -- to say things that are inspired by our theology or studies or recently heard sermon and not inspired by the Holy Ghost.

That is something we cannot afford. So, before you go to sing a note or speak a word, take the moment to wait and if you have nothing to say, then for the love of God say nothing.
